Time to write to your MP! Breed Specific Legislation and the Dangerous Dogs Act

Well, what a hectic time it has been. Sadly, I have been unable to keep up with the blog these last few weeks, as COVID has created such a huge workload for me. That workload has settled slightly, and I am now writing a full blog on the current animal welfare related petitions which are in progress at the moment, with some legal points about these. I hope this will be ready in the next couple of days, so keep an eye out.

I am putting this entry on today, however, because it is time for us to start contacting our MP’s regarding the petition to “Replace Breed Specific Legislation with a New Statutory Framework”. I have previously discussed this in the blog and won’t do that again, but if you want more information on it, you can contact me directly. I am also writing a legal journal article on this issue. However, the letter below has some points too.

Remember, your MP is YOUR representative in Parliament. They are under a moral obligation to listen to you. We must flood Parliament with our letters, both printed and emailed. I will also be writing directly to the Petitions Committee, Cabinet Ministers and Shadow Ministers with some material which is more hard hitting than that contained in this letter.

I have produced it here for you to copy and paste into your own letter. I would please ask you to promote the link to this, rather than copy and reproduce the letter on your own sites, for legal reasons. When sending the letter, there is a bit for you to add your own thoughts, but I would also encourage you to reword bits of it as you see fit, so we are not all sending identical letters, which might look a little odd.

There is a lot of information that could have been put in the letter, and of course you can add that if you like. I have tried to keep it brief as you may find the MP will only read for 30 seconds before turning off.

If you want help finding out who your MP is, you can use this link: https://members.parliament.uk/FindYourMP

Here is the letter:

Re: Petition – Replace Breed Specific Legislation with a new statutory framework.

As a member of your constituency, I wanted to let you know why I signed this petition [insert brief reasons here].

A debate in Parliament is needed to discuss matters beyond simply repealing BSL. These have been highlighted by discussions around the petition as follows:

·       * Why should specific breeds be targeted? Research evidence is building that breed of dog is not an indicator of aggression as highlighted by the RSPCA, Blue Cross and many academics.

·       * When assessing whether a dog is dangerous, it should be decided promptly, and by experts.

·       * There is no need to detain dogs pending investigation as to type or level of risk. It is an insult to the Rule of Law that a person is deemed guilty of owning a banned or dangerous dog before it has been established that this is the case. Recent research suggests that the cost of running the DDA system costs the tax payer over £3 million per year. When the dogs are detained, there should be a strict time limit, as the psychological harm caused to the dog is unnecessary suffering. Some have even been mistreated or neglected, for which photographic evidence is available.

·       * We hear of numerous cases where frightened dog owners are told to sign papers surrendering their dog to the police, in order to avoid having to go to court. The dogs can then be destroyed without a court order. They were not told the full consequences of signing.

·       * An independent review of Dog Liaison Officers must be conducted. There have been many concerns of over-zealous officers, and a diverse range of ideas and beliefs by these officers as to how to deal with a dog detained under the DDA.

·       * Ownership of the dog should never be transferred away from the owner pending investigation, the dog should remain the property of the owner, who should then also be allowed to instruct veterinary care as necessary.

·       * When the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 was passed, and when Breed Specific Legislation was created, evidence which stated which breeds were the most likely to cause fatalities was not given full attention.

All these issues have supporting evidence which the petition originator, Mr Gavin Ridley, could furnish you with upon request. He can be contacted at gsrlegaladvice@gmail.com or on social media (Twitter) @GavinSRidley.

Yours sincerely

  1. Please please put a end to this you can’t just put dog to it death just because they have a certain look yes in every bread of dog that has been brought up in the wrong hands can be vicious be it’s been trained to be that way but still not the dogs fault it’s cruel and very wrong to be killing dogs please stop these killings and whoever came up with the idea of doing this in the first place obviously just have a hate for dogs it’s really must stop plus even some police officers have taken some of these poor dogs away and the poor dog had done nothing wrong they found the dogs to be loving and Placid yet they have still been out to sleep now how is that right I hope you will succeed in putting and end to this horror once and for all thanking your Susan coggins.

  2. To be honest we need to end this bsl and I think that no breed of dog should be targeted. As mentioned above if a dog is raised up through violence or anything its going to be a nasty dog however if brought up in the right hands of a responsible owner they can be as friendly as any other dog.

  4. Any breed had the potential to attack as I learnt to my cost when a collie mauled my then 6 year old daughter. We have had bull breeds for years and they have all been the most loveable breed iv had.
What is happening is disgusting that a family pet can be destroyed cos it has a certain look. Needs to be addressed ASAP X

  5. BSL is pure discrimination against a certain breed of dog, based on their appearance. Loving dogs that have never shown any aggression are being ripped away from their families, purely because of the way they look - and killed. How can this be acceptable in a so-called civilised country? ANY breed of dog, if placed in a desperate situation, would have the potential to attack. And when issues do arise, the problems are nearly always at the other end of the lead. How about tackling the numbers of irresponsible dog owners in the UK?

  9. Please educate yourself before you want to be in charge of someone life... this breed is nanny dog for a reason. They can bite just like any other dog. ( the little one you should worry about more). If they are in normal home with family and kids or elderly than you should live them alone as they won't be dangerous. You should assess the owners and if they come across dangerous than probably they are training the dogs to be dangerous as some people just trying extend something they are missing... it's human that can be dangerous not the dog... my boy save my life and I would do absolutely anything to save him from dangerous people like this who making such an important decisions without having absolutely full knowledge- you I'm talking about, just to be clear!! It's a fact that you are killers of many innocent alive creatures just because.... yes! - because of what actually???? Please tell me. Give me good explanation. You are racists if you judge each of them based on few examples and still with this few examples, people- the owners were to blame , not a dog which have no saying really!!! Let's say I meet few dangerous or uneducated English English people....- should I think that all of them are like this??? Would this not be saying that something is wrong with me not all of them????

  10. You wouldn't like getting judged for hair colour or skin type so why ore judge the dog by the breed? I'm sure if you look at statistics you'll find more chihuahua attacks than pit bull "type" dogs.... The UK is absolutely disgraceful!

  11. Why are people's pets perfectly well behaved animals being seized?.BSL is outdated and barbaric it's time for a law change. If a dog is aggressive and dangerous then it needs to be dealt with, butstop killing g innocent dogs because of what they look like.....

  12. This legislation is antiquated and it is sooooooo wrong. Innocent dogs like LENNOX are murdered simply because of how they look. I demand that this legislation is scrapped once and for all.X☘️♥️

  15. Hello, I'm an American, yet I support getting rid of BSL and the Dangerous Dog Act in the UK. I've worked with many dogs in the past, and all of the pit bulls I've ever met have been nothing but sweet. The most dangerous dog I've ever encountered? A husky mix, who I suspect had something neurologically wrong with him as he would start attacking for no reason, but I don't think it was Rage Syndrome since he didn't act confused during or after an attack.

  16. Really need to stop BSL its a crazy law and not fair on the breed please

  17. The BSL should not be about the breed or appearance of a dog, but about who should be allowed to own a dog, any dog. In my opinion, all dogs should be licensed, chipped and registered to owner and non transferable without proper vetting of potential new owner, no matter what the breed, large or small.

  18. A dog is the extended arm of every owner. It 's ALL about the owner. I worked in a dogshelter for 13 yrs. A not killing shelter, but sometimes you needed to,because the dog was too dangerous. During all my years just one pit bull got eathanised by unpredictable behaviour, at the opposite of that, many shepherds malinois, jack tussell terriers and rottweilers anx even a golden retriever was euthenised. The shepherd malinois were the angry scared biting types, you had to be caereful with. Not the other ones! Every dog found a good home, even the biters were sonetimes placed at big boats, to protect the owner! The pit bull types are not the ones who need to be muzzled, the owners have to! And go to jail when they are irresponsible! And proof is needed. Not that sonwone around the street is scared of these dogs and just cries out, it 's a biting or agressive dog! Stop with this please, for the sake of dogs..ànd their owners!
